When it comes to the youth of a church there is a common point of view that circulates in a lot of churches today. That viewpoint is "our children are the church of tomorrow". At Southwest we take issue with that point of view and we base it upon scripture in the King James Bible.
Matthew 19:13, 14
13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
If children are the church of tomorrow, then why did Jesus tell us not only to suffer the little children but that such are the kingdom of heaven? That's because our children are not the church of tomorrow but rather they are the church of today!!!
In the spirit of not only this commandment from our Lord, but also from the commandment of God found in Proverbs 22:6 that says "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it"; we have several avenues that our children can be a part of to teach them more about the Lord.
First, we have our Youth Program. Our Assistant Pastor John Meade Jr. truly has a heart for the children of Southwest. He is the Youth Pastor over the Youth program. There are classes for all ages from 3 years old all the way to 18 years old.
Also we have Kids of the Kingdom, a group that consists of children of all ages that practice songs and sing for the Lord in our services.
Then, we have Vacation Bible School. During the summer each year VBS is a week long event with fun, games and learning for kids of all ages!
And finally, we offer an annual youth camp following VBS along with other activities throughout the year.
